George Washington Intermediate
NEW CASTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT · 2019

Matt’s Maker Space at George Washington Intermediate School opened in Fall 2019 to provide teachers with space to implement STEAM and maker learning in their lessons and to provide students with the tools to see their ideas come to life. Their space includes vinyl cutters, computers, 3D printers, robotics tools, legos, button makers, and a variety of crafting materials. New Castle also supported teachers in using the space by providing training in conjunction with the Carnegie Science STEM team and teachers from the district high school, and by implementing a template to create lesson plans.

Students have created dioramas, SEL (Social Emotional Learning) journals, scale bridges and space capsules, 3D printed keychains and fossils, sculptures, and have learned about coding with ozobots and Cozmo robots. Some of these projects relate to books that students read in class, including the Magic Tree House, Counting on Katherine, and James and the Giant Peach.
